Uganda mit Homerunners Catharina Rauch bei Softball-Weltmeisterschaft

Dank zahlreicher Geld- und Sachspenden ist der Traum des ugandischen Nationalteams in Erfüllung gegangen: Die Teilnahme an der Weltmeisterschaft in Surrey, Kanada, wurde Wirklichkeit. Für zehn Uganderinnen war es das erste Mal in einem Flugzeug, und es sollten für die Mädels noch viele weitere Premieren folgen. Mitten dabei im Abenteuer WM war Homerunners-Spielerin Catharina Rauch, die seit über einem Jahr in Uganda lebt und seit letztem Sommer das Team als Assistant Coach unterstützt. Für sie war es ebenfalls eine einmalige Erfahrung, wobei sie in Surrey auch viele Freundinnen aus dem österreichischen Nationalteam treffen konnte.

Uganda gewann in der Vorrunde gegen Irland und musste sich Großbritannien und Kanada erwartungsgemäß geschlagen geben. In der Platzierungsrunde lieferte sich das Team zunächst ein spannendes Duell mit Ecuador, das schließlich mit 4-2 an die Gegnerinnen ging. Gegen Kenia hingegen dominierten die Uganderinnen und setzten sich mit Mercy Rule (9-2) durch. Im letzten Spiel gegen Griechenland kämpften die Mädels erneut und unterlagen knapp mit 0-4. Insgesamt kann ein sehr positives Fazit gezogen werden, Uganda ist zum ersten Mal in der Weltrangliste vertreten und hat sich durchaus einen Namen gemacht. Kaum ein Team war häufiger auf Fotos zu sehen.

Während der gesamten Weltmeisterschaft wurde deutlich, was Zusammenhalt und gegenseitige Unterstützung leisten können. So verließen die Uganderinnen Kanada nicht nur mit vielen Eindrücken und Erfahrungen, sondern auch mit neuem Equipment im Gepäck, das für zukünftige (Nachwuchs-)Teams verwendet werden soll. Eine tolle Sache, die im Vorfeld auch von den Homerunners tatkräftig unterstützt wurde. Dafür noch einmal ein herzliches Dankeschön!

Thanks to many donations, the Ugandan national team’s dream came true: participating in the World Championship in Surrey, Canada. For ten of the girls it was the first time on a plane, and many other firsts should follow. In the middle of the adventure World Championship was Homerunners player Catharina Rauch, who has been living in Uganda for more than a year and who has been supporting the team as Assistant Coach since last summer. For her, too, it was a unique experience, during which she could also meet many friends of the Austrian national team.

In the preliminary round, Uganda won against Ireland and, as anticipated, lost against Great Britain and Canada. In the first game of the placement round, the team battled it out against Ecuador, which in the end won 4-2. Against Kenya, the Ugandans were the dominant team and won with mercy rule (9-2). In the last game against Greece, the girls fought again and only lost 0-4. In the end, the conclusion was very positive: for the first time, Uganda is named in the world ranking and definitely made a name for itself. Hardly any other team was part of so many photos.

During the entire World Championship, you could see what solidarity and supporting each other can do. The Ugandans left Canada not only with a lot of impressions and experience, but also with new equipment that can be used for future (junior) teams. A great accomplishment that also the Homerunners supported a lot. Thank you again for that!
